Hello everyone, welcome to our monthly book review for, The Names of God, by Marilyn Hickey.
Our review for March is the chapter for the name Jehovah Elohay (’ĕ·lō·hāy), which means, the Lord My God.
This is a short and powerful chapter about how we can call upon the Lord My God, during trials. There are many Bible verses that use, the Lord My God, some of my favorites are found in Psalm 30, Psalm 38 and Psalm 40.
Psalm 30:11-12
You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;
You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness,
12 To the end that my glory may sing praise to You and not be silent.
O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever.
Psalm 38:15-16
For in You, O Lord, I hope;
You will hear, O Lord my God.
16 For I said, “Hear me, lest they rejoice over me,
Lest, when my foot slips, they exalt themselves against me.”
Psalm 40:5
Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works
Which You have done;
And Your thoughts toward us
Cannot be recounted to You in order;
If I would declare and speak of them,
They are more than can be numbered.
Marilyn speaks about the presence of Jehovah Elohay when we are facing fierce trials, that test our faith. Of course, no one delights in trials, but Marilyn speaks about the benefit of trials, referring to 1 Peter 1:7 , 1 Peter 4:12, Isaiah 43:2 and referring to the powerful accounts of Daniel’s friends in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3) Gideon,s victory in battle (Judges 6) and Samson’s petition to God in Judges 16.
1 Peter 1:7 - that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ
1 Peter 4:12 - Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you
Isaiah 43:2
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned,
Nor shall the flame scorch you.
Hebrews chapter thirteen is referenced, which is a powerful chapter on faith - listing many people from the Bible, who have gone before us, in faith of the promise of the coming of God’s Kingdom. A very encouraging chapter.
Marilyn emphasised that people need to see Jesus walking with us through our trials. This reminds me of the verse in Revelation 12:17: And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Trials give us testimonies of the mercy and faithfulness of God, through Jesus Christ and this chapter on Jehovah Elohay, encourages us to call out to the one who can deliver us or walk with us, through our trials. Praise the Lord!
Psalm 9:10
And those who know Your name will put their trust in You;
For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.
What a beautiful promise we have from our faithful God!
Our next book review will be at the end of April.
