Book Review: The Names of God (Jehovah Shammah)

Hello everyone, welcome to our monthly book review for, The Names of God, by Marilyn Hickey.

Our review for October is the chapter for the name Jehovah Shammah - Jehovah Is There.

Marilyn does an excellent job of taking us through the history of God’s temporary dwellings with His people, reminding us all the way, through scripture, how God has been present for His people throughout the ages, no matter where they were.

We are given ample verses such as 2 Corinthians 5:19, and Colossians 2:9 - that tells us how God was with His people, through Jesus Christ - Emmanuel, God with us.

And further on, how Christ, through His sacrifice on the cross, has reconciled us to our Heavenly Father, and we are now blessed with Christ, in us, through the Holy Spirit.  Again, we are given ample Bible verses to support these promises, some of my favourites being

Ephesians 2:19-22

19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 3:16

Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

Matthew 28:19-20

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

There was some talk of life after death - as I have said in previous podcasts, the Bible points towards the dead sleeping until Jesus returns, not going to heaven straight away.

Marilyn provides us with plenty of promises that God is with us, always - in this life and the eternal life to come, after Jesus returns.

Revelation 21:1-3 was referenced, which is such a beautiful description of the eternal promise we have, through Jesus Christ.

Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.

I’ll close by sharing one more scripture Marilyn included - a wonderful way to end this review.

And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”   Revelation 5:13

Amen!

Our next book review will be at the end of November.  Until then - peace be with you.
