The Names of God (Jehovah)
Hello everyone, welcome to our monthly book review for, The Names of God, by Marilyn Hickey.
Part of the book description says, “Tapping into God’s Infinite Supply”. The book description goes on to say that God’s names reveal a different aspect of His nature. As God is so vast - one name cannot adequately describe Him. Throughout the Bible, God revealed Himself to His people through His various names.
Our review for December is the chapter on Jehovah.
This chapter had a huge impact on me, as I thought about the difference between Elohim in Genesis 1 and Jehovah, who I believe from reading scripture is the divine being who was born as Jesus Christ on this earth. I was inspired to re-read the ten commandments, which Jehovah gave to Moses and I thought about the following verses in John 7:15, Luke 24:25-27, Luke 24:44-45 and John 5:39. All of these verses basically say that the scriptures are about Jesus Christ, they all point to Him.
Luke 24:44-45 - Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
Marilyn speaks about Jehovah meaning, “the revealing one”. This makes me think of how Jesus came to reveal the character of God the Father to us, as the name Emmanuel reveals - it means, God with us.
Reading this chapter on Jehovah was so powerful. The Godhead is beyond our complete understanding on this side of heaven and yet, I had a wonderful time, re-reading Bible passages, with focus on the role of Jehovah, Moses’ calling and how that pathed the way for Jesus Christ on earth. I can’t describe the feeling I had when I was finished studying this chapter, but I am reminded of James 4:8 - Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.
I am looking forward to the next chapter in January. Until then, God’s peace be with you.
