Hello everyone, welcome to our monthly book review. The review for May is, 7 Spiritual Gifts by Marilyn Hickey.
Description
Everyone has gifts and talents, but do you know which gift is the foundation of your God-given purpose in life?
In this updated edition of 7 Spiritual Gifts (formerly published as Know Your Ministry), Marilyn Hickey explains the seven foundational gifts of the Holy Spirit―also known as the motivational gifts―found in Romans 12. These gifts include prophecy, serving, teaching, exhortation, giving, organization, and mercy. You will discover the one gift that you identify with most closely and through which you will obtain the most success. Once you recognize your core gift, you will see how it permeates all areas of your life.
Through this book, which includes a personal gifts evaluation survey, you can feel confident about your God-given calling; be encouraged and motivated in your area of service; live a satisfying life exercising your gifts; work together harmoniously with other believers; and realize your full potential.
You have an indispensable part in the fulfillment of God's plans, and your foundational gift enables you to carry out your unique role. Discover and enjoy that gift as you come to understand your purpose and destiny and effectively serve others in His name.
Review
Marilyn Hickey passed away last month, shortly before I started listening to this book. I was reminded of how I came across her ministry. I was watching something on YouTube and her program came on after the program I was watching finished. The message she had that day spoke to me. I ended up listening to the whole segment, the looked her up and started following her ministry. This led me to review her book, The Names of God. I thank the Lord for Marilyn’s ministry and have faith that she will be resurrected, when Jesus returns, to live in the eternal kingdom.
I happened to be studying 1 Corinthians, chapter 12, which is about the spiritual gifts and thought Marilyn’s book would be a great resource for the practical aspect of this chapter. However, there must always be caution with what scripture doesn’t reveal and what we are told or experience.
Marilyn’s book, 7 Spiritual Gifts, is not only for those who haven’t discovered their spiritual gifts, but for those, like me, who need a refreshing look at their gifts. I really like how Marilyn brings the human aspect to the gifts, giving wisdom about how not to let your human nature get in the way of the wonderful gifts, God freely gives to His people.
There is a paper-based questionnaire you can take to discover your gifts, which apparently accompanies the physical book. As I listened to this book on Audible, I did not have access to that, however, I plan to purchase the book and look forward to seeing the questionnaire. This isn’t the first book I have read about the spiritual gifts and know that God reveals our gifts through different ways. One thing is for sure, prayer is essential in the process, which Marilyn refers to many times.
I certainly learned a lot about how I manage my gifts and will continue to pray and study God’s Word to see how my gifts can be utilized to the fullest.

Thank you for reading this review. Until next time, God’s peace be with you.
