Review: Desmond Doss: The Hero of Hacksaw Ridge
Desmond Doss made a name for himself – by saving lives. He refused to bear arms or carry a weapon – in the midst of constant enemy fire. He was unwilling to take a life or even so much as touch a weapon. He did however say that he would be proud to serve his country as a medic if they would let him. He was the conscientious objector who chose to fight – fight in a way that would help people. He had the wild idea that he could serve his country at war and also obey the command: “Thou shalt not kill.”

Description
Desmond Doss made a name for himself – by saving lives. He refused to bear arms or carry a weapon – in the midst of constant enemy fire. He was unwilling to take a life or even so much as touch a weapon. He did however say that he would be proud to serve his country as a medic if they would let him. He was the conscientious objector who chose to fight – fight in a way that would help people. He had the wild idea that he could serve his country at war and also obey the command: “Thou shalt not kill.”
My Review
I have heard of Desmond Doss, but have never read any books or seen a documentary about him before finding this thirty-minute documentary on RedeemTV. Desmond's choice to refuse to disobey God’s Law, was very inspiring and there is no doubt, as he stated, that God gave Him the power, to uphold his desire to follow God’s Law. It is easy to think that it is impossible to be a conscientious objector, or anything else that goes against the grain in society - but God shows us over and over again, that He rewards those who seek him and desire to obey Him.
Psalm 19:7-11 is about God’s Law - I have recently learned the verses by heart - because the Law of God is beautiful and amazing.
The Law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul
The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple
The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart
The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes
The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever.
The judgements of the Lord are true and righteous altogether
More to be desire than gold, yea, than much fine gold
Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb
Moreover by them your servant is warned, and in keeping them there is great reward.
This documentary is nothing short of inspiring and shows us that even if we have to stand alone in society, Jesus is with us through every battle we face and His blessings on us, in turn, blesses others, for God’s glory, not ours. As God’s word states, and this documentary shows, prayer, worship and living according to the Bible should be central in our lives.
Psalm 1:1-3
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
Jeremiah 29:11-13
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you.
13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
Luke 4:8
And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.”
Amen!
