Hello everyone, if you are reading this review on the Sabbath, then I would like to wish you a Sabbath filled with the clarity of what Jesus has called you to do, in His ministry.

This week’s review is for the series, Jesus, the Game Changer. This episode is called, Wealth.

Jesus, the Game Changer is a 10 part documentary series (with 4 bonus episodes) on how the life and teaching of Jesus changed the world and why it matters. The presenter, travels to the US, UK, Australia, Singapore and India interviewing over 30 authors, speakers and modern-day game changers. This series covers topics like equality, forgiveness, leadership, women and children, care and more.

I enjoyed the last series, Towards Belief, so much that I looked up the ministry, Olive Tree Media, and subscribed to their content channel. That’s where I found this 10 part series, Jesus, the Game Changer.

Description

Surprisingly, Jesus spoke more about money than nearly any other topic. Jesus challenged the prevailing wisdom of His day, and taught that all money was God’s, to be used for Him instead of for personal advancement.

This episode taught me an expression I wasn’t familiar with - Gospel Patrons. These are people that felt the calling to use their wealth to fund the gospel. They were given the gift of giving, which is listed in the gifts of the Spirit in Romans 12:8, which says, “if it is giving, then give generously.”

In addition to Jesus’ teachings, this episode mentions two Gospel Patrons, Humphrey Monmouth and John Thorton.

Humphrey Monmouth (died 1537) was a wealthy 16th-century English cloth merchant and civic official in London, who famously used his shipping business and fortune to finance and protect William Tyndale as he translated the New Testament into English.

John Thornton was a prominent 18th-century British merchant and philanthropist (1720–1790). He built a massive fortune through the Russia Company, dominating the Baltic trade in timber and naval supplies. He was also a leading evangelical Christian reformer and a key member of the influential Clapham Sect. Source:wikipedia

This episode peaked an interest in me to read more about Humphrey Monmouth and John Thornton, as well as other gospel patrons. It mainly draws on the teaching of Christ about serving money instead of serving God, with references to parables and warnings about loving money.

Jesus told a parable about a rich fool (Luke 12:13-21).

Matthew 6:20 - But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

I am also reminded of the parable, The Rich Ruler in Luke 18:18-29.

My prayer by the end of the episode, was to let me be of the mind that John Thornton was, when he was at the end of his life and told those surrounding him of the impact Jesus had on his life. These were words of someone with deep, unshakable faith in Jesus Christ, who had answered and followed his call to serve Jesus until his life’s end.

Jesus’ words, recorded in Luke 10:27 say - “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” Amen.
