How many times have you heard the hymn "Amazing Grace?" It's the most popular song in history, sung over 10 million times each year. Ever wondered where it came from? Hear the incredible story in our program, "The Slave Trader – Amazing Grace." It was written by a notorious blasphemer, a rebellious shipman, a slave trader who later became a church minister, and an abolitionist who fought publicly to end slavery. In this program, we'll learn about John Newton and the history and meaning behind the best-loved hymn, Amazing Grace.

This documentary was presented by Gary Kent, who presented the Daniel series and the documentary on Florence Nightingale that I reviewed last year. Gary also does a very good job of presenting this documentary.

I had not heard of John Newton before. This documentary gives a good background on John Newton’s life and his transformation into a follower of Jesus Christ - it is an amazing account.

While each person’s testimony if coming to Christ is unique, we have things in common. Some of those things were mentioned during the account of John Newton’s life. We can relate to the state of being in rebellion against God and the feelings guilt, shame, lack of compassion and absence of peace. Christ changes these dark attributes into obedience to God, no guilt, acceptance, compassion and a peace that we simply don’t understand. All these spiritually-filled attributes come from the grace of God.

Gary Kent mentions that God hates sin and loves the sinner. I recently had a discussion with someone about how this term does not appear in the Bible. However, while the term, God hates sin and loves the sinner, does not appear word for word in the Bible, the concept is biblical, as the content of the Bible points to that God hates sin, but loves those He has created. As Jesus came to show us the true character of God, then He also represents the same concept and showed us this, through the life He led here on Earth (see Hebrews 1:9 and John 3:16).

This episode brings to life the Bible’s promise that God is able to transform our minds (Romans 12:2), pull us out from the dark pit we fall into (Psalm 40), call us out of darkness, into His marvellous light (1 Peter 2:9), create a new heart in us (Psalm 51) and much more.

Before he came to Christ, John Newton was a man who considered the life of many people, nothing more than easily discarded cargo. By God’s grace, John’s eyes were opened, enabling him not only to value his own life differently, but work to care for the group of people he had persecuted.

To God be the glory, in Jesus’ name.

I will no doubt reflect on John’s testimony when I hear the hymn, Amazing Grace and be thankful for my own deliverance, as the words of Amazing Grace apply to my life too.
